So all Devas went to Goddess Manasa Devi(goddess of snakes)to stop the yagna. During the yagna, takshaka asked Indra for protection, but Indra was unable to protect him from the powerful yagna. Janamejaya (son of King Parikshit, Kuru dynasty)performed a yagna( Sarpa Sastra yagna) to wipe out the race of all snakes as a revenge of his father’s death due to snake bite of Takshaka(king of snakes). One such story from Mahabharata,which points the significance of snakes. There are various stories mentioned in Hindu scripts and beliefs associated with Naga Panchami.

Nagas are worshipped for overall protection from evil,and to overcome fear of snakes. As per Hindu calendar, the festival is observed on the fourth and fifth day of Shravan.This day is dedicated to worshipping of snakes praying for the welfare of the family and to get rid of the evil effects of Rahu and Ketu, as well as from Kaal Sarpa Dosha. Naga Chathurthi and Nag Panchami are celebrated throughout India. But on the day of Nag Panchami, pujas are offered to particular nagas, such as Ananta (also called as Sheshnag-Lord Vishnu rests on him), Vasuki(Lord Shiva carries it around his neck), Padmanabha, Kambala, Shankhapala, Dhartarashtra, Takshaka (King of Nagas), and Kaliya(Lord Krishna dances on him). In the Vedas, many serpent gods have been mentioned. One of the mystifying and remarkable Hindu festivals is of Nagas as Naga Panchami and Naga Chaturthi. We human beings keep worshipping nature for its blessings. Hi all, Indian festivals are so rich, colorful and have significance attached to each one of them.
